I use Esbilac Puppy milk mixed with one part powder to two parts water. At about 6-7 weeks of age many coati become lactose intolerant. The stools will be yellow water with white clumps. When this happens use one Lactaid tablet per 8 ounces of milk and let stand in the refrigerator for 24 hours. Stools should be normal within 12 to 24 hours after feeding the Lactaid treated milk.

It’s very important not to over feed your baby in any one feeding. They will continue to eat until they look like a bloated dog tick, which can cause inhailation pneumonia, loose stools and a loss of body condition. If it’s still hungry, wait about 45 minutes to offer the bottle again.  At 5 weeks of age, they should be eating about one ounce per feeding four times daily (this will increase rapidly with age).Remember to burp it after feeding!

When to wean is up to you and your individual circumstances. Harold, a 13 year old neutered male, and Jan a 6 year old mother to many babies will still take a bottle if you give it to them. In the picture below Kevin, a 3 year old neutered male is waiting for his turn at the bottle.

The more frequently you bottle feed a baby the less inclined they will be to eat solid food. At about 5-6 weeks old, start leaving some dry puppy food available, we use Pro Plan from Purina. When starting them on solid foods, I have good luck mixing apple juice with puppy chow or monkey biscuits.

Each coati is an individual with different taste buds, but the only thing I have found they like better than one cricket, is two crickets. Some of their other favorite foods are, watermelon, eggs, bananas, luncheon meats, grasshoppers, pizza, fig newtons, and blueberry muffins.

Vaccination schedules should be the same as for any puppy and kitten. First vaccinations and worming at 5-6 weeks old, then every 3 weeks until they are 16 weeks old, with annual boosters and worming. They should receive the dog distemper-parvo shot (DHLP-P), plus the cat panleukopenia vaccine . They can be wormed with any good dog or cat wormer.

Don’t forget the ever- famous flea. Do not use over the counter flea   products, as many of these are toxic to exotic animals. For youngsters under 12 weeks, lightly spray either Vet-Kem brand or Adams brand flea spray on a towel and wipe the coati with it. Don’t over do it. For older coati use the Front Line brand Top Spot. Apply the liquid high enough on the back of the neck so they can’t reach it. For multiple coati households, separate Coatimundi for at least 12 hours after application.
